Clea M. Senneville True sustainability needs an ethical revolution

Ethics is the most integral aspect of the concept of sustainability, and it seems to keep getting plundered or eluded under the weight of society's allegiance to technological innovativeness as means to some kind of "end" characterized as "sustainable." Authors Nelson & Vucetich argue in "The Ecologist" online that in order for sustainability to be meaningful, in the sense that the essence of its definition(s) indicate(s), it must (re)emerge - be (re)framed - as an actionable and pragmatic y… Continue

Braden R. Kay Sweden starts an American sustainability experiment

Perhaps every group of people interested in sustainability should follow Sweden's example and help mentor families in their sustainability practices. The following Post article details how Sweden has adopted 4 Northern Virginian families and is helping them with energy choices and consumption practices. If we want to make sustainability real, this is one way to put theory and research into action. Way to go Sweden for giving it a try! If a Nation can do it, you think Universities and schools cou… Continue

Thad Miller My First Turkey-Free Thanksgiving

I just enjoyed my first Turkey-Free Thanksgiving. No, I did not have Tofurkey (which may or may not be an abomination of nature). Just good old stuffing, green beans, mashed potatoes, cornbread and cranberry sauce. Ok, ok, and some turkey gravy. Is that moral flip flopping? Maybe. I'll get to that later though. This transition from a conscientious omnivorism to vegetarianism is a recent and long development for me. I thought it might be worthwhile to reflect on this for my own selfish reasons b… Continue

Thad Miller Science, ClimateGate and Hope

If you haven't heard yet, you should get out of your finals cave and update yourself on ClimateGate. In brief, e-mails at the Climate Research Unit (CRU) a the University of East Anglia were hacked. The e-mails show climate scientists discussing their data, how to present it and which (skeptical) papers not to publish. Even if you still believe that the science is sound and justifies acti… Continue

Jessica Fox Yeah, I said it: Vegetarianism

Image Credit I have to admit that under any other circumstance, I might feel a tinge of guilt by adding this post. I often choose to avoid being yet another tree-hugging vegetarian preaching about how the meat industry is ruining the world. It oftentimes would only result in making… Continue

Maren Mahoney Food Bank Challenges (Donate at GIOS until Nov. 23rd!)

Here in the US, food banks face pressure from ever-increasing numbers of people seeking help. There are countless food bank stories but there are two profiled in the NY Times recently that are particularly interesting, and I highly recommend reading them in full. In October, the NY Times Magazine's Food Issue tra… Continue

Robert Horner What “Zero Waste” Misses

If you’re like me (growing up in the 80s and 90s), you were probably exposed to recycling in elementary school and onward. If you’re even more like me, it was love at first sight. Recycling was the perfect solution. One you were done with something, you just had to dump it in the recycling bin so it can be used for something else. In this way, w… Continue

Haley Paul We're still talking about biofuels as a legitimate solution to fossil fuel reduction?

Picture found here

Ok, so I understand that much of the evil with biofuels depends on the crop. Corn and soybeans being devoted to fuel instead of food? Not so good. Cellulosic sources like switchgrass for biofuel? Perhaps a little better, because you can grow them on more marginal… Continue

Robert Horner Urgency: Help or Hindrance?

The climate change debate is fraught with arguments promoting fear and urgency to motivate immediate greenhouse gas emission reductions. Many groups arguing for mitigation point out that GHG reductions must begin as soon as possible to try to fend off the most drastic climate predictions. This sense of urgency probably adds power to their arg… Continue

Sandra Rodegher It's official, green is the new black!

It is very interesting to see how trendy environmental consciousness has become. It's popping up in the strangest of places! Brothels go Green!
